The prose remains sharp, but the structure is more conventional. It’s heavier on philosophy, dream-logic, and religious speculation. Still excellent, but slightly more indulgent. Think Hyperion on a sugar crash.

3. Endymion

And now the wheel turns. Centuries have passed. New characters take the stage. Raul Endymion, a rough-around-the-edges everyman, becomes the new protagonist. He's tasked with protecting Aenea, a messianic figure with a destiny Simmons has clearly been cooking up since page one. It’s more adventure-oriented, more romantic, more cinematic—but also more uneven. The Catholic Church has become a spacefaring theocracy, and Simmons uses it as a punching bag with glee and, occasionally, too much smugness.

4. The Rise of Endymion

This is where Simmons dons the prophet’s robes. He goes full theological space opera—Messiah figures, quantum metaphysics, the nature of love, consciousness as a force that shapes the cosmos. There are moments of grandeur, even genius. But the sermonising can grate. It becomes preachy, and the characters sometimes feel like vehicles for ideology rather than people. That said, it still sticks the emotional landing far more successfully than most epics.


Verdict

The Hyperion Cantos is a towering achievement, flawed but fearless. The first two books are essential reading for anyone who thinks sci-fi can be art. The second two are more divisive—richer in ideas, weaker in form—but still vastly superior to most of what's published under the genre banner.

If Ender’s Game is military SF’s guilty conscience, Hyperion is its literary ambition given voice. Not just a series to read, but one to wrestle with. You don’t finish it—you stagger away from it, full of questions, awe, and perhaps a little bit of Shrike-induced dread.

Dan Simmons rates the novels of John Fowles highly, perhaps not surprisingly as they are writers of a similar style, and has stated that he regularly returns to "Daniel Martin". A product of the mature Fowles, this elegiac novel is superior to "The Collector", "The Magus" and - IMHO - even "The French Lieutenant's Woman".

David Wallace says in his intro that this is accessible to anyone with a graduate level understanding of quantum mechanics. Well, that includes me but, of course, it's heavy going. The deep mystery is the relationship between the spacetime we appear to inhabit and the configuration space (high/infinite dimensional Hilbert space) which quantum-theoretic entities inhabit. I read on and wait for enlightenment.

Currently being read to Clare and we've just started part three: Fiat Voluntas Tua.

"Everything that could NOT possibly go wrong ..."

Tyler Cowen has an article at Bloomberg: "Nuclear War Is Still Very Possible and Very Scary".

Commentator reaganite88 had this response.
"Great column. I once got to talk to the head of Sandia National Laboratories about how they did analysis of the possibility of an unintentional detonation of a nuclear device. He said they had two teams look at each device... one to think about everything that could possibly go wrong... and another to look at everything that could NOT possibly go wrong. Because the impact of an unintentional detonation was so massive the second team was needed to try to reduce any "black swan" events that the first team could not imagine happening. "
Another commentator, Juan Pablo, noted that "Only a fundamentalist state would launch a nuclear war with MAD. MAD has worked for 70 years."

That was a theme of Dan Simmons's controversial SF novel, 'Flashback'.

It's imaginable to detonate a few nuclear devices if you're a fundamentalist. Global nuclear annihilation is something only America, Russia and China could aspire to. I don't see any Islamic state being on the road to that capability.

The Experience Room

Look at pictures of your parent's house as compared to yours. It's a bit cluttered but in essence not a lot different, is it?

Not as many electrical points.

It's tempting to assume that, like the bicycle, we've got there. We know how to make the ideal person-cave.

Not at all. We're in the interregnum while they figure out programmable matter: self-reconfiguring smart dust, computronium.

You know, like how the Terminator gets smashed up, then flows like a black fluid back into .. the Terminator.



The house of the future. It's made of smart matter - tiny programmable components which attach to each other to form chairs, tables, rugs, pictures and screens. We sometimes call computers a case-study of 'deferred design'; the future dwelling is deferred décor.

Your apartment will simulate any reality by creating smart-dust avatars (telepario) with the floor, walls and ceiling showing synthesised scenes. VR without the helmets.

You might still run into the walls, though. Much better to directly stimulate the brain. Emulate all sensory inputs and interpret all effector outputs in a totally simulated environment.

How many SF stories have we read with that theme? The slippery slope to the prospect of the brain in a vat, so unsettling at the end of Dan Simmons's spooky 'Flashback'.

We're living the transitional decades, waiting for AI, nanotech, genomics, neuroscience and materials-tech to catch up. The world will then lurch to a very different place.

Is quantum suicide allowed?

So here is my dilemma. I'm still reading "The Hollow Man" by Dan Simmons to Clare. The story starts with hero Jeremy losing his beloved wife Gail to the agonies of cancer. The hero and his wife are telepathic. (We are prepared thus far to suspend disbelief).

In one thread of the story, Jeremy falls apart in grief and descends into a hobo-existence (this is set in America) - there is a purposeful analogy to Dante. In the other thread, we get flashbacks to Jeremy's research as a mathematician, full of gobbledegook about personality/consciousness as hologram, the Schrödinger equation and populist quantum theory. It's the data dump from hell, riddled with spurious guff. This I don't read to Clare.

In the end, you sort of know that Jeremy and Gail are going to get reunited, but how can this be? The answer is a variant of quantum suicide. My question: do I dare read this to Clare; does it pass the suspension of disbelief test?

I can get away with the idea of a quantum superposition. Most people know that, for example, a particle's position can't be definitely localised - we say its wave function is spread out. This is equivalent to saying that it's in a superposition of location states. It's basic quantum mechanics, experimentally observed and not the least bit speculative.

We can also have discrete rather than continuous superpositions: the best known is Schrödinger's famous cat. This is also legitimate science though the fine details remain unresolved.

Now to quantum suicide (Wikipedia article). It's like you replace the cat and the radiation-triggered cyanide is replaced by a gun. You decide to shoot yourself. Now, there is some probability that the gun will misfire due to some unlikely outcome of events down at the quantum level. So the time-evolution of you with the gun evolves into a superposition like this:

|You and gun not fired>  =>  a|you-alive and gun-misfired> + b|you-dead and gun-fired>

a and b are coefficients expressing the relative amplitudes of these two states, with |b| expected to be enormously larger than |a| for a reasonably reliable gun.

In the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics, this simply means that you'll most likely end up dead: end of story. The superposition quantum state 'collapses' to the
 |you-dead and gun-fired>
state with probability |b|2 (or maybe you got lucky with probability |a|2) once somebody notices (these days we invoke decoherence).

But in the many-worlds interpretation there are no collapses. All states of a superposition are realised in separate versions of the universe. Since you have no consciousness when you're dead, your continuing sense of self will continue to exist in the universe with this state:
|you-alive and gun-misfired>
Immortality!

Quite a lot of physicists believe in the many-worlds interpretation: it seems the only way to make objective sense of quantum mechanics and to remove the subjective role of a 'collapse-inducing' observer. But would Clare, my proxy for 'the person in the street', believe it for the purposes of a plot denouement?

I don't think so. And that's why Dan Simmons novel just doesn't work and I continue with the challenging work of real-time editing!

"The Hollow Man" - Dan Simmons (1993)

From the Kirkus Review of "The Hollow Man" by Dan Simmons (1993).

"...  Gail and Jeremy Bremen are telepaths who met and married ten years ago. Together, they find relief from the psychobabble of voices around them, the minds of people they meet and a larger psychobabble grounded in the whole "wave'' of human intelligence.

When Gail dies of an inoperable tumor behind her eye, Jeremy freaks out, burns down their house, abandons his professorship, and goes on the road.

In Florida, he witnesses a mob murder, is kidnapped by the mob, later escapes.

Taken up by Miz Morgan, a rancher, he finds himself facing razorblade dentures over his important parts and escapes from her too.

In Las Vegas, his mind-reading stands him well at the poker table; he's a huge winner, but the mob is back.

After saving his life still again, he winds up in the hospital, enters the closed-off mind of a retarded blind boy, and finds Gail alive in a probable reality that the boy has put together from particles of Jeremy's mind.

Throughout, in flashback, we are treated to far-out wave-particle theory about a unified wave of human consciousness that allows for transfer of mind or being.

From this description, you might expect a lyrical novel featuring great psychic leaps of imagination.

Simmons leaps, but where he lands in a parallel probability is far less vividly experienced than possibilities allow. The nostalgic opening chapter of 'Summer of Night' is better than this whole novel.

Nearly everyone whose mind gets read is sour and mean-spirited. Big brainy equations, small rewards."

Simmons wrote "The Hollow Man" after publishing his four "Hyperion" novels. He is still plainly fascinated by such Hyperion themes as whether the universe somehow physically encodes realities such as personality, love and consciousness.

Simmons knows enough physics to appreciate that this would mean a common theory for both quantum-mechanics/relativity and consciousness. Hence the novel is full of references to Schrodinger's equation, holography, standing waves, chaos and fractals.

Sadly, this falls into the well-worn SF trap of trying to weave coherent pseudoscience into the plot (Greg Bear commits similar crimes in "Moving Mars"). 

The "Hyperion Cantos" worked as a beautifully cohesive creation because it merely assumed its universe could be made to work. Like sausage-manufacture, it pays in these circumstances not to look too closely.

Back at "The Hollow Man", if you delete the speculative theorisation there is still an interesting account of the protagonist Jeremy Bremen's descent into American hell.

It's not wholly convincing: Bremen's motivations and actions often don't really make sense and his many escapes from disaster stretch credibility. Still, Simmons is a good-enough writer to keep the pages turning through the bulk of the book.

The final resolution is pretty opaque but makes more sense if you check out 'quantum suicide'.

Non habemus papam

Dare I find parallels between the current situation Pope-wise and the final two volumes of Dan Simmons' Hyperion series?

The bureaucracy of the Pax endlessly recycles its malleable machine-politician pope, Lenar Hoyt; this last pope has been a similar, voluntary prisoner of the Vatican bureaucracy. Anyway, enough of that.

In his lead character Aenea's teaching, Simmons points out that the Buddha never taught the reincarnation of the self or soul. Googling (Buddha teachings on reincarnation) confirms this. The Buddha appeared to believe that consciousness, the self, is recreated moment-by-moment as a kind of dynamic standing-wave. An analogy would be a flame.

On death, an enlightened pattern dissipates; one which has not renounced the passions can persist and in some mysterious way inform the life of a subsequent creature .. reincarnation of a kind.

I think this makes more sense if we  consider that the meaning of our lives, for good or ill, is the effect they have on our families and communities.

A productive life will help progress our ongoing civilisation; an unproductive life will subtract from it.

This is, of course, so not a new thought - cf. "The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity" - Tolstoy. Recognising our human co-dependence, an evolutionary biologist would agree.

(Everything true about human life is grounded in sociobiology *smile*).

Treats from Amazon!

How the post-person must have staggered up the driveway! Our Amazon delivery this morning included:

1. Nightrider by David Mace. I wrote a few days ago about the strange case of of vanished science-fiction writer David Mace: Nightrider is my second favourite book by this author after Fire Lance.

2. The Hollow Man by Dan Simmons (a T. S. Eliot reference). I'm currently immersed in Endymion, so almost three quarters through the four volume Hyperion sequence (this is my second reading), but The Hollow Man is new to me. Look out for a review in due course.

3. The Way (DVD). This is a film about the legendary Christian pilgrimage in North Spain - to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (el Camino de Santiago de Compostela) - Saint Iago is St. James. The film was made by Martin Sheen's son, Emilio Estevez who was inspired by his own son's experience on 'The Way'.

Estevez's son Taylor (at the time 19 years old) and Martin Sheen (whose The West Wing TV series was in hiatus) took part in the pilgrimage route, driving the length of the Camino. On the way Taylor met his future wife, so that thereafter the Camino held special meaning for him. After the trip a series of discussions started between Sheen and his son for a movie about the Camino de Santiago.

We saw this film at the cinema and it made an impression - so now we get to watch it again.

4. Peppersmith Chewing Gum (12 packets). This is the legendary Xylitol chewing gum which is so good for your teeth, gums and maybe even ears! Another month's supply. We also have xylitol mints and dark chocolate.

And not from Amazon. The NHS wrote to tell me that two years have passed and I'm invited again to the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. My kit should arrive in two weeks: don't ask.

SciAm - no thanks!

The heavy white clouds occlude the sky; it can't decide whether to sleet, rain or snow. In any event, snow is predicted overnight.

I am in receipt of ever more strident letters from Scientific American begging me to resubscribe and promising enticing gifts if I so do.

In fact I'm going to let SciAm go, along with their less-than-attractive bribes. The quality of the articles seems just a touch dumbed-down these days while only a minority are actually of interest to me. But perhaps the biggest irritant is that SciAm has followed New Scientist down the path of Guardian-style stance-taking. I'm in the market for the latest theories and results. I don't need SciAm's smug moral exhortation on climate change, biodiversity or any other fashionable but ultimately value-driven cause.

I last read Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels back in 2002 and have thankfully forgotten the details. This has made rereading the first two volumes a delight.

Hyperion starts slow, as we gradually learn about the Shrike pilgrims and their back-stories. Soon we are deep into the epic struggle between the Hegemony worldweb and the 'barbarian' Ousters, subtly orchestrated by the sinister Technocore.

Brilliant characterisation, stupendous world-building, a supple and unpredictable plot, multiple storylines and an underlying transcendent theme, slowly revealed.

What's not to like?
